“What if Maxwell’s Demon was real?”

In 1870, James Clerk Maxwell is barely 40, and already a retired professor. He lives a quiet married life on his Scottish country estate and reads the Bible to his servants.

Yet he is persuaded back out of retirement — reluctantly, his biographers say — and in 1871 he moves to Cambridge, leaving a scientific legacy that will change the world.

8 years later he is dead. What happened? And why was he doing experiments with a Demon?

‘Dafty’

As Maxwell reflects on being bullied as a child, his Demon spurs him on to greatness

‘Maxwell’s World’

The Demon gives Maxwell a glimpse of the future that his discoveries will bring: our modern electrical world

— script sample —

Forces unseen act in this world
That many seek to understand,
Some of which cannot be told
Yet move the mortal hand...

As pen it holds and page it inks
With thoughts of “I”, the one who thinks,
Seldom do we thinkers pause
To debate our actions’ cause.

It’s said we get a guide at birth
Who knows and guards our fate:
The plan for our time on Earth
Until our terminal date.

Guardian angel is but one name;
D(a)emon may be just the same.
Genius spirit, force for good
Inspiring each to what they should.

And so did live one past great soul
Gone gentle into that good night.
His demon mastered heat and cold;
Hail Maxwell, Apostle of Light!
